More success for Barnet swimmers

Barnet Copthall's swimmers spent the first half of June competing in the London Regional Championship at Crystal Palace.

The club left the championships with one overall champion, 22 individual event champions and 14 championship records.

Four relay teams also qualified for the National Age Group Championships.

The highlight of the championships was Madeleine Tichborne, 13, gaining the London junior record for 1500m freestyle. She is the youngest holder of a junior record.

In total, the Barnet Copthall team won 26 gold medals, 15 silvers and 10 bronzes.

Individual London Regional champions included Chiara de Simone, Emily Bell, Jodie Hare, George Kapanadze, Karis Fuller, Yaron Ash and Jamie Richter.

Head coach Rhys Gormley said: "I am beginning to run out of words of praise to describe the commitment and achievements of our young swimmers. At every championship and gala the team enters they continue to put in outstanding performances.

"All out efforts are now focussed to turning our regional champions into national champions in Sheffield (this month).

While Barnet Copthall's senior swimmers were at the Regional Championships in Crystal Palace, their junior counterparts travelled to the Potters Bar Open Meet. Young swimmers aged between nine and 12 years competed in the gala.

Three swimmers had outstanding swims: Liam Chong (12), William Keegan (nine) and Olivia Cichon (nine), the trio all gaining medals.

Junior age group coach Andrew Swanston praised his young swimmers: "This is the first time many of the young swimmers have travelled to swim at an away gala and they have acquitted themselves well. "The team enjoyed a host of top-ten finishes which will act as a spur for them to go on and win medals in future galas."
