Wingate & Finchley jumped to fourth place in the league with their sixth successive victory, stretching their club record unbeaten run to 12 matches.
The game was fast paced at the start, with Wingate & Finchley creating the better chances. Chris Chase had a shot from ten yards that he connected well with but sent straight at the keeper Aaron Omand that was well blocked. He then went one better and scored in the 17th minute. A defender played a short pass back towards the Omand, which Chase intercepted and slotted comfortably past the helpless keeper.
The lead was doubled with a beautiful goal five minutes later. Jordan Fowler sprayed the ball wide to Chase on the right wing, and he squared it into the box to the unmarked Dave Laird and he took his time before clipping the ball over the keeper.
The Blues' domination continued, but they were left disappointed when the referee failed to award a backpass that was handled on the goal-line, and then his assistant waived away claims for a penalty when new signing Angus McLachlan was tripped by the keeper For all of the visitors' excellent work in the first half, the game changed after the break as Cheshunt came out on the offensive. They should have scored within a matter of seconds as their first attack of the half lead to an intense goalmouth scramble which was eventually hacked to safety, though Cheshunt were claiming the ball had clearly crossed the line but this was denied by the same assistant referee.
The game could have been put beyond any doubt when Dave Laird flicked the ball through to Chase who had beaten the offside trap, but having made space away from his marker he shot over the bar.
Shortly after the hour mark, Cheshunt pulled their way back into the game when Ricky Light halved the deficit with a superb curling chipped shot from outside the area at the end of a quick counter-attack.
With only one goal separating the sides Cheshunt grew in confidence, though they could not break through the committed defending of Wingate.
In stoppage time Angus McLachlan, who had only recently joined from Cheshunt, cut in from the right wing and scored with a sublime finish across goal to secure the win for his new side.
Lineup: King, Weatherstone, Wright, Fowler, Nielsen, Shehu, Michael Lenahan, Rifat (Edgerley 75), Laird (Smith 84), Chase (Gershfield 82), Angus McLachlan.
