Daggers' double sees off Bees

Dagenham & Redbridge 2 Barnet 0 . . .

Champions Barnet failed to sign off from the Conference on a high at Victoria Road this afternoon.

The Bees, with nothing but pride to play for, were second best for most of this game and can have no complaints about the result.

John Still's Daggers were the hungrier and made the most of some poor defending either side of the interval.

The first half produced few chances. Barnet had the opening effort on 12 minutes when Nicky Bailey cut inside and drilled in a powerful drive that keeper Tony Roberts pushed over with his fingertips.

Jake Leberl had the next chance but headed a free-kick straight at Shane Gore with just five minutes of the half remaining.

Neither side looked like making the breakthrough but, on the stroke of half-time, a Paul Bruce corner was allowed to reach Craig Mackail-Smith at the back post and he simply hooked the ball in from virtually on the goal-line.

The hosts doubled their lead on 56 minutes. Scott Griffiths slid the ball across the area and, after Chris Moore had failed in his attempt to flick it in at the near post, it reached the unmarked Glen Southam who could not miss.

Barnet tried to claw their way back but their only effort of note came three minutes later. Lee Roache flicked the ball into the path of Richard Graham but his shot was straight at Roberts, the keeper comfortably pushing it away with his leg.

This was a forgettable end to an unforgettable season.
