With just over a week until the start of the season, a double from midfielder Nicky Bailey was enough to see off Conference team Canvey Island.

Bailey, signed from Sutton United this time last year, staked his claim for a regular midfield berth as manager Paul Fairclough decided on a five-man midfield with Dwane Lee sitting just in front of the back four, and trialist Morgaro Gomez probing from midfield.

Gomez, formerly with Windsor and Eton, again did enough to suggest he would be a valuable addition to the Bees' squad with a solid performance.

Indeed, it was a long ball forward by him which led to the Bees drawing level on 37 minutes after the home side had gone ahead from the penalty spot.

Bailey picked up Gomez's pass and crossed for Giuliano Grazioli to pass into an open goal. Bailey then got in on the act shortly after the break with a cross-cum-shot which looped over Danny Potter in the home goal.

Twenty minutes from time Bailey grabbed his second after he combined with Ben Strevens. Strevens fluffed his shot but Bailey nipped in to give Barnet a comfortable 3-1 win.

With Liam Hatch rested and Dean Sinclair and Simon Clist both out injured it was an opportunity for reserves and trialists to impress. Clist will be wondering if he will get his left back position back from Anthony Charles after Charles had an impressive game at left back.

Keeper Scott Tynan, who is set to stay with the Bees after he signed a new contract on Friday, was replaced at half-time by Ross Flitney, whose kicking remains a concern.

Fairclough again gave a run-out in the second half to trialists Adam Gross (left back, ex-Charlton Athletic), Louie Soares (midfield, ex-Reading) and Ben Bowditch (midfield, ex-Colchester).

Jason Norbet, a young striker formerly with Watford, also appeared in a Barnet shirt for the first time on trial, but struggled to impress during his 23-minute cameo performance.
