Barnet Copthall Swimming Club spent a fruitful ten days in Sheffield. First a squad of senior swimmers competed in a high-level gala against top clubs from around the country and then three Barnet Copthall swimmers competed in the British Championships.

The three swimmers who had earned the right to swim in the British Championships were 17-year-old Charlie Boldison; 16-year-old Oliver Keegan and 14-year-old Madeleine Tichborne.

The most successful of the three was backstroker Charlie Boldison achieving semi-final places in each of the 50m and 100m backstroke events and ninth in the 200m backstroke final. Following this performance in the 200m backstroke, Charlie has been selected for this event as part of the Great Britain Juniors team for the European Championships in Helsinki in July.

Head coach Rhys Gormley praised his swimmer’s achievement.

“Charlie Boldison has talent but has also worked hard to reach this standard of swimming. He swam consistently well over all the backstroke events at the British Championships and now he has earned the right to represent Great Britain in the junior European championships. It is his first step towards achieving a senior international cap – the goal for many of the Barnet Copthall swimmers.”

The previous weekend saw success for many of the Barnet Copthall swimmers at the City of Sheffield Swimming Club premier gala. The club swam against top opposition but came away with 10 gold medals; 2 silver and 9 bronze medals.

The most successful swimmers were: Freddie Cornwell (11 years) gold in 100 backstroke; 200m butterfly; 100m and 400m freestyle and 400m individual medley; Madeleine Tichborne (14 years) gold in 1500m freestyle and 200m backstroke, plus a further bronze; Yaron Ash (14 years) gold in 100m backstroke, plus a further bronze; Emily Bell (12 years) gold in 200m butterfly plus a further 2 silver and 1 bronze; Jodie Hare (12 years) gold in 100m butterfly * Forty members of Barnet Copthall Swimming Club aged between 10 and 18 years have now travelled to Majorca to participate in warm weather swimming training ahead of the regional and national championships later in the summer. The swim camp is supported by the GLL foundation.
