THE cricket season came to an end last weekend for our local cricket teams.

There were solid finishes at the conclusion of a long campaign in the top division of the Middlesex County Cricket League for Brondesbury, Finchley and also Stanmore.

Brondsbury ended in fourth place with 83 points, some way behind champions Ealing Cricket Club.

Finchley came in sixth, having racked up 67 points over the course of the season.

They put them five points in front of Stanmore, who ended up two places clear of the drop-zone.

Survival in the division was assured with a win over rock-bottom Acton, last weekend.

Stanmore were impressive as they wrapped up a nine wicket win.

Marc Reingold took four wickets as tight bowling by the visitors restricted Acton to an innings total of just 134.

Then the openers guided Stanmore to an easy win. Jonathan Whealing smashed a not-out 61 runs in 69 balls, along with Steve Mehra (35).

Navin Samarakoon with 33 then helped wrap up a fine final day win.

Elsewhere, there was a home shock defeat for Brondsbury to relegated Shepherds Bush.

It was not quite the finish to the campaign Brondsbury would have hoped for, as only opener Tom Simpson reached 50 runs. Not other batsman broke 30 runs as the total stuttered to 157.

Playing for pride, Bush’s batsmen then dug deep and made 161 runs for the loss of four wickets.

Elsewhere, Steve Selwood hit a not-out 103 as Finchley racked up an impressive eight wicket win over Eastcote.

Sam Robson (65) and Josh Knappett (52 not out) ensured the season finished in style, as Finchley overhauled Eastcote’s 237 target.
