Barnet left it late to secure victory as they continued their pre-season with a 4-2 win against non-league Sutton United.

The Bees fell behind early in the game as Anthony Riviere fired home inside the first ten minutes.

Despite having numerous chances in the opening period Barnet failed to capitalise and went in at the break behind.

A second half comeback was in order and Barnet grabbed an equaliser through Sam Deering. The Bees then took the lead after a neat finish from centre-back Clovis Kamdjo.

The momentum was with Barnet but a goal against the run of play from Sutton’s Leroy Griffiths left the game wide open.

With minutes remaining Barnet managed to score twice to take the victory. The third goal was provided by trialist Jason Price before Deering scored his second of the night.

The match was the penultimate fixture in the Bees pre-season campaign which has seen two wins and a draw.

There was a first start as an official Barnet player for new signing Danny Senda. He was on the right flank as the Bees lined up with up with a traditional back four having played with three centre-backs in previous games.

There were players with football league experience in the Sutton squad. Leroy Griffiths had spent two years with Queens Park Rangers and Simon Downer plied his trade at Leyton Orient for six years.

The opening exchanges were dominated by Barnet and there was an early chance for the Bees when Sam Deering shot over after a Mark Marshall cross.

With Barnet dominating possession and looking in control it came as a surprise when the conference South side took the lead.

After across into the box U’s midfielder Riviere was left unmarked and he fired past Liam O’Brien in the Bees goal. The goal did not fluster Barnet and they continued to pass the ball well but were lacking a cutting edge.

The Bees first real chance fell to Ricky Holmes.

After a clever though pass the striker managed to break beyond the Sutton defence.

It looked as if the equaliser would be inevitable after he had gone past keeper Wayne Shaw, but the striker could only find the side netting from a tight angle.

Holmes then had another chance moments later but he could not beat Shaw who tipped his across goal shot past the post.

The game had to be temporarily stopped midway through the first period as the sprinkler system on one side of the pitch malfunctioned leaving the referees assistant worrying about more than just offside decisions.

With water still pouring out of one side of the pitch the game resumed and the break in play seemed to have helped Sutton.

United striker Craig Dundas nearly doubled the lead after a magnificent solo run. The big striker skipped past two Bees defenders before his shot went just past the post.

Holmes then had his third chance of the half. Sutton keeper Shaw came charging off his line to clear the ball but he only found the striker.

After instantly controlling the loose ball Holmes shot from 40 yards and was unlucky to see his effort drift just past the post.

Izale McLeod, who had scored three goals in his three pre-season games, burst into life late on into the half.

The forward accelerated away from the Sutton defenders but his near post drive rebounded off the woodwork and out of play.

There were no half time changes by Lawrie Sanchez as the first team continue to improve their fitness before their opening League Two fixture against Morecombe.

Sutton looked the better side at the beginning of the second 45 minutes and came close to increasing the lead.

Dundas again caused problems for the Bees backline but he sent his curing shot wide of O’Brien’s post.

Despite not being at their best Barnet managed to grab an equaliser.

After a deep ball into the box found trialist forward Price, he calmly headed the ball down for the oncoming Deering who placed his shot into the bottom corner.

The Bees took encouragement from the goal and were in front midway through the second period.

After Holmes and been fouled outside the area the resulting free-kick was fired in low and Kamdjo managed to swivel and send a half volley past Sutton keeper Shaw.

Trialist Price then had two quick opportunities to make his mark on the game but he fired well over the bar on both occasions.

The Bees lead did not last long though. U’s striker Griffiths was left unmarked in the Barnet box and, despite a fine one handed stop by O’Brien, the ball dropped over the line and the scores were again level.

Barnet were rattled by the equaliser and it was Sutton who looked the more likely to take the victory.

O’Brien had to be alert to spot Griffiths getting his name on the score sheet a second time.

Barnet had a golden opportunity when a Jordan Parkes cross found Deering unmarked in the box, but the midfielder could only direct his header wide.

The game looked to be heading towards a draw but Barnet scored twice in second half injury time.

Trialist Price gave the Bees the lead with a neat finish before Deering grabbed his second of the night to give the score a slightly flattering look.

The Bees will hope to finish their pre-season campaign unbeaten as they face MK Dons at Underhill this Saturday.
