Barnet suffer 3-1 defeat against York City

The storm clouds above Underhill seemed to reflect the mood in the stadium as Barnet suffered a 3-1 defeat York City.

Daniel Parslow and Ashley Chambers scored in the opening 16 minutes to put York deservedly ahead before the Bees hit back through Jon Nurse.

York added a third just before the break as Michael Coulson found the net. The Bees left the pitch to boos.

Despite a bright start to the second period, Barnet could not find a way back into the contest and the Bees are left searching for their first win of the season.

Following the 1-1 midweek draw against Bristol Rovers, Mark Robson named an unchanged side for the match.

York started the game brightly and went ahead after just seven minutes. A cross into the Barnet box wasn’t properly cleared and Parslow had time to fire past Liam O’Brien from the edge of the area.

The Minstermen pressed the Barnet defence and mistakes were forced. Barry Fuller was caught in possession on the halfway line and Chambers sprinted half the pitch before smashing the ball home.

Nurse nearly immediately pulled a goal back but his low shot rippled the side netting before Anthony Edgar forced Michael Ingham into a good near post stop.

Knowing they had to attack, Barnet improved after conceding the second goal. They moved the ball with more purpose and, with thirty minutes gone, reduced the deficit.

A great run and cross from Andy Yiadom allowed Nurse to top in from close range. The mood inside Underhill lifted.

Barnet continued to push forward in an attempt to find an equaliser but on the stroke of half time, York added a third.

Coulson received the ball on the edge of the Bees area. He was not closed down and had time to shoot into the corner of O’Brien’s net.

Barnet began the second period with an urgency that was lacking in the opening 45 minutes. Edgar came close with a shot from distance. The Bees looked threatening.

However, the match game to an abrupt stop as Nurse suffered a collision of heads as he won a header. The striker seemed unconscious as he hit the floor and after several minutes of treatment, left the pitch on a stretcher.

The momentum Barnet had before the stoppage had fizzled out and York looked the more dangerous side.

The visitors should have put the game out of the Bees reach when a cross into the six-yard box was met by Jonathan Smith. However, he could only direct his header wide. It was a let off for Barnet.

Both teams then created chances for a shot on goal but were unable to test either goalkeeper.

As the game drew to a close both sides had good chances. City substitute Patrick McLaughlin forced O'Brien into a fine stop before Jake Hyde's half volley was well saved by Ingham.

The scoreline was a fair reflection on the chances created but Robson will be undoubtedly disappointed with the ease York found the net.

The Bees are back on the road next week as they visit Rochdale.
