Hendon record first league win of the season with victory against Leiston
11:01am Wednesday 17th October 2012 in Sport
Hendon finally celebrated their first Ryman Premier Division win of the season after securing a 2-1 victory against Leiston.
Despite their poor start to the campaign and their lowly league position, the Greens began the contest strongly and Greg Ngoyi missed two chances to open the scoring in the first five minutes.
However, they continued to attack and got their reward as Ngoyi lost his marker in the box, collected a low cross and fired into the net from seven yards.
It was a deserved goal for the hosts and they doubled their lead on the quarter hour. Grenadian international Elliott Charles was put through but he unselfishly squared to Ngoyi who rolled the ball home.
The striker had the opportunity to seal his hat-trick with 25 minutes of the opening period remaining but missed a one-on-one chance with Leiston goalkeeper Danny Potter.
Emmanuel Osei nearly pulled a goal back after a mistake from Scott Cousins but the striker could only fire wide of Berkley Laurencin’s goal.
Osei caused the Hendon defence plenty of problems and he missed another chance to get Leiston on the scoreboard.
However, on 30 minutes he did reduce the deficit. A corner into the host’s penalty area wasn’t cleared and Osei smashed the ball home from close range to send the two sides in at the break with the score at 2-1.
There were plenty of chances in the second period but both Potter and Laurencin kept the opposition attackers at bay.
Hendon defended well to secure an important victory and although Greens’ boss Gary McCann admitted his side were nervous towards the end of the contest, he was pleased to gain the first win.
