Graham Stack says he was over the moon to be named the Conference’s player of the month but insists the award belongs to Barnet Football Club as a whole, rather than him personally.

The 32-year-old gloveman was announced as the winner of the Conference’s player of the month gong for August yesterday afternoon and Stack stressed he could not have landed the title without his team-mates.

“Obviously the award means a hell of a lot to be recognised as the best player in the league for a month,” enthused Stack. “This isn’t for me and I’ve made that clear to everyone in there and the manager, this isn’t for me at all; this is for Barnet Football Club, the whole team.”

Five clean sheets in six league games ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat of Alfreton Town had helped the Bees to the top of the Conference standings – ahead of second-placed Halifax Town on goal difference.

However Stack was quick to praise those in front of him for the Bees’ excellent defensive record.

He explained: “I would not have kept any of those clean sheets had it not been for my front two working so hard and relieving pressure from us.

“It’s been a massive effort and there have been a lot of changes this season and pre-season and I’ve taken on a new role. It’s been hard work but to be rewarded with something like this, I’m absolutely over the moon, I’m delighted.”

After three consecutive shut-outs, Stack had to pick the ball out his net against bottom-of-the-league Alfreton on Saturday and admitted he was frustrated at conceding just a third goal of the season.

“I’m gutted, absolutely gutted,” admitted Stack. “I’m delighted that we’ve won the game but I’m fuming because I’ve set myself targets this year and at home, we’re going to be under less pressure and the chances are it will be easier for me to keep clean sheets at home.

“For me today, that’s another one that’s got away from us there. They’re my targets; the be-all-and-end-all is to win the league. If I don’t keep a clean sheet between now and the end of the season and we go up, it’s not going to bother me one bit, it’s just a personal bit of pride.”
