Nine-man Barnet were knocked out of the FA Cup first round by Wycombe Wanders, with the League Two side coming from behind to advance.

Barnet took the lead after just two minutes when John Akinde – who scored eight in 15 for the Chairboys in the 2009/10 season – bustled through and rounded Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Ingram to net.

However the League Two side levelled when Paul Hayes stroked home a penalty in the 35th minute after Matt McClure appeared to have gone down under minimal contact in the penalty area.

And, a minute before the break, Barnet’s task was made harder when former Blues loanee Sam Togwell was dismissed for a tackle which was deemed to be dangerous.

Goals from Aaron Pierre and Sam Wood sealed Wanderers’ passage into round two after the break, as Barnet fell at the second hurdle. In the 90th minute, Andy Yiadom was also given a straight red for a challenge on Josh Scowen.

Captain Charlie MacDonald made his first start for the Bees since sustaining knee ligament damage at Dover Athletic in September.

The 33-year-old striker, who returned as a substitute in last Saturday's dramatic win at Welling United, partnered ex-Wanderers loanee Akinde up front.

New loan signing Bernard Mensah was named amongst the substitutes for the Bees, two days after making the switch from Championship Watford.

Graham Stack was protected in goal by a back four of Yiadom, David Stephens, Bondz N’Gala and Elliott Johnson.

In midfield, Luisma Villa and Lee Cook were on the flanks, with Togwell partnering Curtis Weston in the centre of midfield.

For Wycombe, boss Gareth Ainsworth brought McClure and Max Kretzschmar into his side. The Blues were only able to name five substitutes due to a number of fitness concerns. The Bees shot out the blocks and made the ideal start, taking the lead after just two minutes through the in-form Akinde.

Johnson's ball over the top was flicked on by MacDonald, allowing Akinde break the line, and the powerful forward showed no hesitation in rounding goalkeeper Ingram before sliding into an empty net as the angle diminished.

Weston ought to have doubled the Bees’ lead, when in the 14th minute he found himself one-on-one with Ingram, who got down sharply to twice deny the midfielder.

Wycombe immediately charged into Barnet’s half and McClure scuffed an effort towards goal which required a block on the line from Yiadom.

Ainsworth’s side could have gifted Barnet a second shortly after when MacDonald slid in to intercept a short back-pass, but only helped deflect the ball out for a goal kick as he tested Ingram at his near post.

The Bees had undoubtedly started the brighter and after half an hour came close several times in quick succession as they threatened to double their lead.

First, Cook saw a dangerous from kick from the right tipped away from under the visitors’ crossbar, before a clever near-post delivery had Ingram scrambling to turn the ball away. From the second flag kick, N’Gala crashed a header over to finally relieve the pressure on the Blues’ goal.

Within a minute, Luisma, his back to goal, sent an audacious first-time bicycle kick just wide of Ingram’s left-hand post. The Spaniard appeared to think he was offside and rushed the contact when he had time to bring the ball under.

Ten minutes before half-time, Wanderers pulled level in contentious fashion. A rare foray into Barnet’s penalty area saw McClure go to ground under minimal pressure from Yiadom, and from the resulting spot kick, captain Hayes fired past Stack, who had guessed the correct way.

A minute before half-time, Barnet were on the wrong end of another contentious decision when Togwell was dismissed for a challenge on Matt Bloomfield. Earlier in the half, Blues midfielder Scowen had only been cautioned for an almost identical challenge on Cook.

Unsurprisingly considering their numerical advantage, it was the visitors who began the second period in the ascendancy; McClure seeing an effort from 20 yards tipped over by Stack.

Just before the hour mark, and in correlation with the run of play, Wycombe took the lead. Left-back Joe Jacobson earned a corner with a shot from distance and stepped up to curl the set piece onto the head of Pierre, who powered Wanderers into the lead.

With the Bees behind for the first time, Allen threw caution to the wind and introduced forward Mensah in place of Luisma.

The Bees thought they had equalised shortly after the hour mark when Yiadom flew in to power a header home from a corner, but the goal was disallowed for a prior infringement.

With 15 minutes to go, the Football League side finally killed off the tie. McClure sprinted away down the right and weighted an inch-perfect ball over Stack to the back post, where Wood arrived to touch home from less than a yard out.

Mensah tried his luck in the final ten minutes, turning to lash a volley towards the bottom corner, but Ingram got down well to save.

In the 90th minute, Barnet’s misery was compounded when Yiadom was sent off for a challenge on Scowen out on the touchline.

For Barnet, the focus quickly returns to their promotion challenge, with Torquay United the visitors to The Hive on Tuesday night - a challenge Allen's side will face without Togwell and Yiadom, both of whom will be suspended for three games.
