Woking travel to The Hive on Saturday looking to claim just their second win in ten Conference fixtures and build on a 3-0 victory over Alfreton Town last weekend.

The Cards have only won two of their last 11 in all competitions but conversely, have only suffered three defeats in that period too.

And the reason for that anomaly is Garry Hill’s side have enjoyed an FA Trophy run which had taken them to the cusp of the quarter-finals before exiting at the hands of Dover Athletic, 1-0 after a 3-3 draw in the initial tie forced a replay.

Woking had been taken to a replay in the second round as well, beating Oxford City 2-1 at Kingfield after a 2-2 draw at the home of the Conference North side.

Their run in the Trophy has made for a very stop-start January but despite that obvious disadvantage when mounting a play-off push, Hill’s side are still perched in the more-than-useful position of sixth, just a point outside the play-off places.

After finishing ninth last term, the part-timers have been in the play-off picture throughout the season and have on more than one occasion been the side nipping at Barnet’s heels in second.

The Cards were unbeaten in their first nine Conference fixtures and were the holders of the division’s longest unbeaten record before a 1-0 defeat at Torquay United in the middle of September.

It was a busy January transfer window for former Dagenham & Redbridge boss Hill, who lost winger-cum-forward Dean Morgan to League One Crawley Town on loan for the rest of the campaign.

The former Luton Town attacker was the club’s second-highest scorer this term with nine in 23 league starts.

Not that the Cards will struggle for goals in Morgan’s absence. Top-scorer Scott Rendell has 15 in 23 league starts and an impressive record which reads 32 in 56 starts for his current employers across almost two seasons.

The former Wycombe Wanderers and Peterborough United striker is still only 28 and boasts a wealth of experience when it comes to scoring goals both in and outside of the Football League.

Hill was quick to bolster his forward options following Morgan’s switch, though, adding Ross Lafayette on a one-month loan from Luton.

The former Chesham United and Wealdstone striker netted 35 times in two seasons with Welling United before joining John Still’s side in the summer. However, chances at Kenilworth Road were limited this term and the 27-year-old has dropped back into the Conference in search of regular action.

Former Gateshead forward Yemi Odubade, capable of playing out wide of through the middle, has joined on loan from play-off rivals Eastleigh and will bring a threat from the wide areas.

One familiar face for Cards fans is Wimbledon wideman Chris Arthur, who has signed a fresh loan agreement at Kingfield after impressing during the first half of the campaign.

Ipswich Town striker Jack Marriott had also initially agreed to return to Woking but his fourth loan stint was cut short in order to facilitate a loan move to League One strugglers Colchester United.

Also returning is former Charlton Athletic and Grimsby Town defender, Aswad Thomas. The 25-year-old left-back had a two-game loan stay with Barnet in 2008 and was recently freed by the Mariners after a three-year stay at Blundell Park.

Thomas made 92 appearances for Woking during his first spell, scoring three goals. Hill’s assistant, Steve Thompson, told BBC Surrey: "Aswad was doing very well at Grimsby and suddenly found himself out of favour.

"He's not played loads of games this year, but he thinks he's ready to come straight in.

"He did very well before when he was here. We didn't want to lose him.”

Thompson added: "In the last three years he's played well over 100 Conference games and he's well liked by the players and the fans who remember him.

"He's fully fit, he's an athletic lad and perhaps he just needs a change."
