Wrexham celebrate 150 years of existence this season but it has not been a memorable campaign on the pitch for Kevin Wilkin’s side.

The Dragons won 1-0 at The Hive in September, becoming just the second side to beat Martin Allen’s men in the process, and the win should have signalled the start of a promotion push.

However, just four league wins later, the Welsh outfit are currently perched in the precarious position of 17th, with just a seven-point cushion between them and the relegation zone for comfort.

For Wilkin, who succeeded veteran striker Andy Morrell as manager last March, the one saving grace is the club’s cup runs

A 1-0 victory at AFC Halifax Town in the FA Trophy on Tuesday night means Wrexham are now just 180 minutes away from a trip to Wembley.

The national stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for the Dragons recently though, losing the 2013 Conference play-off final 2-0 at the hands of Newport County. Wrexham also fell short in the play-off semi-finals in 2011 and 2012.

Their run to the semi-finals of this year’s Trophy has pitched them against the only other Conference side remaining and fellow under-achievers, Torquay United, for a place in the final against either Bath City or North Ferriby.

Wrexham also enjoyed an adventure in the FA Cup, reaching the third round before eventually succumbing to Premier League Stoke City, 3-1. Having gone in front via Mark Carrington, three goals in the final ten minutes sent the Potters into round four.

And former Nuneaton Town boss Wilkin hopes his side’s Trophy exploits will have a positive affect on their league form.

He told The Leader: “I think we thoroughly deserved the result. It is a fantastic result for everybody concerned at Wrexham and gives us a great opportunity in the semi-final.

“We just need to start pulling some results together in the league and moving it forward, and I am confident we can do that.”

With just 31 goals scored in 29 games, the Dragons are the division’s second-lowest scorers, with only bottom-of-the-league Nuneaton Town managing fewer with 26.

Top-scorer Louis Moult, who followed Wilkin from Nuneaton in the summer, has 13 goals to his name in all competitions but the former Stoke City prodigy is the only player at The Racecourse Ground to hit double figures this term.

The nearest player to Moult in goal-scoring terms is winger Elliott Durrell – who was a menace at The Hive – with four, the last of which came in November.

Wilkin used the January transfer window to bolster his squad with the signing of Walsall midfielder Kieron Morris on a youth loan, whilst Kyle Storer left financial strugglers Kidderminster Harriers for north Wales on a deal until the end of the season.

The New Saints’ Sam Finley also joined the Dragons on loan. The 22-year-old midfielder was the 2013/14 Welsh Premier League’s young player of the year and has previously played in England for Warrington.

Finley is expected to miss Barnet’s visit with injury, as is impressive Stoke City loanee goalkeeper, Daniel Bachmann. The 20-year-old stands 6ft 2in tall and has made 14 appearances for Wrexham this term, the last of which came on Boxing Day due to a leg injury.
