Welling United’s recent success was achieved by a rookie manager and so it seems only right the Wings have called upon the services of 30-year-old right-back Loui Fazakerley to turn their season around.

After Jamie Day, himself only 35, defected to join Conference South nouveau-riche Ebbsfleet United, former Grays Athletic boss Jody Brown was appointed as Day’s replacement.

But a horrific run of form which saw the Wings lose eight of his nine matches in charge resulted in Brown being dismissed after 73 days and Fazakerley stepping up “for the foreseeable future.”

And so far, so good. Fazakerley has overseen three matches, picking up a win, a draw and a loss.

A 1-0 defeat at Altrincham five days after Brown’s services were dispensed with was a pretty inauspicious start to life in the dugout but Fazakerley has since overseen a creditable 1-1 draw at Gateshead and an impressive 2-0 win at Lincoln City.

However, the former Eastbourne Borough and Bromley full-back can hardly afford to rest on his laurels yet. The Wings currently sit 21st in the Conference, five points from safety with eight games to avoid the drop.

They had been in the relative comfort of 16th when Brown was prised away from Isthmian Premier Division Grays but a 4-0 loss at Dover Athletic in his first game in charge was indicative of how his brief tenure would pan out.

His cause was hardly aided by the ill-informed decision to imply Wings supporters were not “educated football people” following the 1-0 defeat at lowly Nuneaton Town.

Speaking after the loss he said: “I am not a fan, I am an educated football person. So I know the situation I inherited; 12 senior players with two goalkeepers.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, Brown survived just one more game before being given the bullet.

Fazakerley has already been active in the transfer market, extending the loan deals of Reading goalkeeper Jon Henly and Sheffield United defender Sam Berry until the end of the season.

The Wings have used an incredible 40 players in the Conference alone this season and that figure includes no fewer than four goalkeepers.

Former Bee Dominic Vose is also on the books at Park View Road and has scored four times in just eight outings since joining from League One Colchester United in January.

The 21-year-old made two substitute outings for Barnet before leaving Underhill and moving up the Football League to join the U’s.

Barnet’s record against the Wings in league competition is good. The Bees have only lost twice in 13 meetings with the last defeat coming in 1989.
