Curtis Weston’s first-half strike sealed a 1-0 win for Barnet at Dartford and made the 2014/15 campaign the most fruitful of his career but the midfielder still cannot put his finger on the reason for his excellent form in front of goal.

The Bees vice-captain now has nine for the season in all competitions with five of those coming away from home, four in his last six and each of those coming in consecutive away games.

Utilised to great success in a ‘number ten’ role behind John Akinde for a number of testing away fixtures this season, the 28-year-old has now surpassed his previous best for a season – the eight he hit for Gillingham five years ago.

“I do not know [if there is a reason for this hot streak],” admitted Weston. “I have been playing for a few games behind John (Akinde) but not today. It just fell for me nicely on the edge of the box and I was there at the right time,” he said of his match-winning effort.

“Obviously I am enjoying it away from home at the moment and it was good to get the goal today because it is a vital three points as well.

“I have never been a big goalscorer but I have got nine so far so I am hoping to do double figures by the end of the season.”

The former Leeds United midfielder added: “I did it (played an advanced midfield role) a few times when I was at Gillingham and that season I scored eight goals I think so I like it in there and enjoy it; especially playing behind big John (Akinde) because he wins the aerial battles and allows me to run in behind.

Victory over the Darts was Barnet’s second 1-0 win over the Easter period following the success at home to Nuneaton Town on Saturday and Weston believes the Bees have learnt the painful lessons of last-gasp equalisers at Alfreton Town and FC Halifax Town.

He explained: “I think we have had a few games throughout the season where we have not maybe got the result we quite deserved or expected but we have bounced back, that is the main thing.

“And as you saw today and on Saturday we always bounce back which I think is really important. That is what we have in our team, the togetherness to get behind each other and put together a performance like today.”

He continued: “We have got strong characters in the group. We get behind each other and gee each other up for the next game and that is why we have only ever lost two back-to-back.

“I think the back four today were magnificent. (Graham) Stack did not have a lot today but when he was called upon he did his job. He does more than that anyway, he talks from the back, organises and is forever getting people in place so that is vital for us as well.”

And Weston also paid tribute to the travelling Bee Army, which looked to account for as much as half of the 1,579 crowd at Princes Park.

He said: “They are vital for us. You saw at the end when we were walking around clapping them and thanking them for their support how loud they were.

“They have been vital throughout the season, especially the away support, we have noticed that and they have been really good.”
