There was rare good news at Aggborough - home of Kidderminster Harriers - this week as the club announced an alliance with the Independent Supporters Trust (KHIST) to underwrite the budget for the rest of the season.

It has been a season of turmoil for the Worcestershire side, who have at least secured their place in the Conference - soon to be National League - for next season.

The club’s financial woes have been well-documented and forced boss Gary Whild to trim his squad as his budget was slashed.

That resulted in Michael Gash being sent out on loan to Nuneaton Town before being freed and joining Barnet. Former skipper Kyle Storer was another to leave, joining Wrexham on a deal until the end of the season. Targetman Nathan Blissett has joined Bristol Rovers following a loan stint.

However, a statement released by the club earlier this week confirmed Kidderminster’s immediate financial future was safe.

"The board of directors met with the major shareholders ahead of their board meeting," said the club statement.

"We are pleased to announce that all parties concerned have agreed to meet the club's financial obligations until the end of the season.

"This positive action will enable the board of directors to focus on all the revenue for next season to support the future financial sustainability of Kidderminster Harriers. This action also allows, with immediate effect, all income generated to fully support the 2015-16 playing budget."

In the boardroom, Rod Brown has stepped up to become Harriers’ new chairman, succeeding Ken Rae following his resignation a week earlier. Rae had only been a board member for 14 months prior to Friday’s departure.

Brown, who has enjoyed non-league success in the dugout with Stourport Swifts and Redditch United, is joined on a new four-man board by Wayne Allen - a former director at Cheltenham Town - and KHIST’s Geoff Coles and David Williams.

On the field it has been a sorry story for Whild, though perhaps unsurprisingly considering budgetary restrictions in place.

Just one win in 13 is a miserable record and Saturday’s 3-0 loss at relegation-threatened Welling United (beaten 5-0 at The Hive last month) gives an indication of the kind of form Harriers are in.

Gibraltar international Reece Styche and experienced centre-half Josh Gowling were also among those to leave - albeit on loan - as Whild attempted to reduce the wage bill. But veteran striker Lee Hughes has returned to his first club, scoring three times in ten league starts.

The 38-year-old spent three years at Aggborough between 1994 and 1997 with his form earning a move to West Bromwich Albion.

Signed by Coventry City for £5,000,001 in 2001, Hughes hit 15 league goals in 38 starts before returning to The Hawthorns for half the price 12 months later.

It was in his second stint with the Baggies he was imprisoned for causing death by dangerous driving in November 2003. He was released in August 2007, three years into a six-year sentence.

Upon his return to the professional ranks, the Smethwick-born forward impressed at Oldham Athletic, Notts County and Port Vale before dropping into non-league football with Forest Green Rovers.

A one-in-two record in a year with Rovers was not enough to guarantee regular first-team football and Hughes re-joined his first club on January transfer deadline day.

Kidderminster came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at The Hive in October, with Gash getting the first and Blissett scoring two identical headers in as many minutes to steal an unlikely point.

Harriers have lost seven of their last ten and have only won one game league fixture in 2015 - 3-1 against Braintree Town last month.
