Martin Allen has revealed he plans to return Andy Yiadom to a right-wing role this season after signing Gavin Hoyte.

The 23-year-old began his career as a wide player with Watford and when he joined Barnet from Braintree Town in August 2011, he was utilised as a right-sided midfielder.

However, gradually the former Hayes & Yeading man was moulded into a right-back and excelled last season as the Bees won the Conference for a record third time.

And so impressive was his form, the Bees turned down two offers from League One outfit Barnsley earlier this season.

Now though, Yiadom is set to revert to his right-wing role after former Gillingham defender Gavin Hoyte moved to The Hive on a two-year deal earlier in the summer to provide competition at full-back.

Yiadom played the second half of Saturday’s 6-1 drubbing of Hungerford Town on the right of midfield and discussing his plans for the defender, Allen confirmed his intention to push him further forward.

“I have watched the videos of England C last season and had some good, long chats with Paul Fairclough,” explained Allen. “Andy Yiadom was the Player of the Year last year for England playing on the right-hand side of midfield.”

He continued: “People have said to me that last time he played right-side midfield he did not do so well. I said back: ‘Last time he played right-back he did not do so well’. Yiadom is a different player and person now.

“I get on very well with Paul and talk to him on a regular basis and he told me on right-side midfield, he was his best player, so I have got in mind what I want to do and Andy is more than happy.”
