Barnet midfielder Tom Champion admits the Bees are anxious to get their first win since returning to League Two but is adamant if they maintain their performance levels so far, they will win more games than they lose this season.

For the second time in as many fixtures it was a hard luck tale on Saturday as a second-half brace from Wycombe Wanderers’ Garry Thompson condemned Barnet to a 2-0 loss at The Hive.

That followed an opening-day defeat at Leyton Orient in which Martin Allen’s side failed to take their first-half chances and ended up on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline against the recently-relegated O’s.

But Champion, who made his second start in a week against the Blues after playing against Millwall in midweek, is confident the tide will turn in the Bees’ favour before long.

He said: “Everyone is anxious to get three points on the board.

“You can have back-to-back defeats at any time of the season but obviously being the start of the season it affects you a little bit because you want to get off to a good start.

“But it is a long season, there are loads of points to play for and we know if we keep doing what we are doing we will win more games than we lose.”

Barnet have not been outplayed in of either of their first two league fixtures but on both occasions they have been punished for their profligacy in front of goal – something they could not have been accused of last season as they finished top scorers in the Conference with 94 goals.

So can Champion and co. do anything more than they have been or is it a case of waiting for Lady Luck to smile on the side?

“I think it is a bit of both,” he said.

“You can always say that you can improve in certain areas. But at the same time I don’t think we are getting the luck as well at the moment.

“Hopefully we can keep knocking on the door, getting good performances in and like I say, I don’t think that we need to change too much.

“At the end of the day if we keep creating chances, one of them is going to go in and we fancy ourselves from there.”

The Bees had created a handful of excellent chances before Thompson opened the scoring at The Hive with a stunning effort from 20 yards. The experienced forward then doubled up from the penalty spot in injury time as the Bees pushed for an equaliser.

Champion stressed the significance of the first goal and admits Barnet must learn their lessons from two defeats which have hinged on the first goal.

He explained: “I don’t think they created much. I don’t think Graham Stack had a lot to do, especially in the second half, and I can’t remember him making too many saves before the goal went in and then that changed the game.

“They definitely didn’t carve us open; they played a clever game away from home and were solid enough and held onto their lead when they got it.

“Maybe there is a lesson in there for us but we created enough chance to get something but it did not come for us.”

The former Cambridge United midfielder continued: “Obviously you just hope that you are going to get more chances but you do wonder how many you are going to get.

“It was frustrating and I was right in front of the Gashy (Michael Gash) one and I thought that was going to be the one.

“It was a great save from the keeper who played well so it was frustrating but your just willing that ball to go over the line, it just was not our day.”
