With two wins from three games Bristol Rovers' Football League return has started rather more brightly than Barnet's.

Beaten to the Conference title on a dramatic final day of the season which saw Martin Allen's Bees defeat Gateshead 2-0 at The Hive, clinching a record-breaking third title thanks to a brace from Mauro Vilhete, the Gas put seven past hapless Alfreton Town to no avail.

But rookie boss Darrell Clarke, whose only previous managerial experience came with Salisbury City before he got the top job at the Memorial Stadium, did well to lift his side and seal promotion via the play-offs at the first time of asking.

A two-legged victory over Gloucestershire side Forest Green Rovers secured the Pirates' place at Wembley Stadium where they overcame Grimsby Town from the spot after a 1-1 draw.

In front of more than 47,000 at the national stadium it all appeared to be going wrong for Clarke's side when Lenell John-Lewis put Town ahead after just two minutes.

However, Welsh youth international Ellis Harrison came to the rescue - as he had done so often during the regular season with 13 goals from seven league starts - and forced extra-time with an equaliser just before the half-hour mark.

Rovers then prevailed from the penalty spot 5-3 without missing one of their kicks to seal a highly impressive and immediate return to the Football League, 12 short months after bowing out with a whimper at home to Mansfield Town.

A 1-0 opening-day defeat at home to Northampton Town was soon put to bed with a victory at Yeovil Town in a West Country derby, by the same scoreline, on the second weekend of the season.

Even more impressive was the last-gasp 1-0 triumph at the much-fancied Luton Town on Tuesday, a result which lifted Rovers up to eighth position in the fledgling League Two table.

Winger Rob Sinclair got the match-winner and speaking afterwards told the Bristol Post of the importance of victory at Kenilworth Road.

He said: "It's a huge result. Luton hadn't been beaten at home for a very long time and will be one of the teams that will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

"They are a strong and organised side and in Craig Mackail-Smith and Paul Benson probably have the best strike partnership in the league.

"To get a win against them on their own ground after also winning at Yeovil on Saturday gives us plenty of confidence going forward.

"We've left it late to get the winning goals on both occasions, but our performances over the two games have warranted the wins we have got.

"It has been a good week, but it is over now and we have to think about going back to work with a very hard game against Barnet at home on Saturday.

"We have everything that is needed to help us build a great record at home because we are a hard-working side with great support behind us.

"We've had a good start to the season, but that is all it is at the moment and we need to keep the momentum going."

Manager Clarke, starting his second ful has largely kept faith with the group which won promotion last season, making just six additions and only four of those on a permanent basis.

The experienced Chris Lines is one of those and the 29-year-old midfielder returns to his first club for good, four years after initially the Memorial Stadium.

Lines made more than 150 first-team appearances for Rovers during a four-year stay which ended in 2011. Since then the Bristolian has taken in spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Port Vale.

After initially returning on loan from the Valiants at the end of last season, Lines has made the switch permanent this summer after his contract with Vale was terminated by mutual consent.

Also bolstering the midfield is former Arsenal and Preston North End prospect Jeffrey Monakana.

The 21-year-old winger moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2014 after impressing with the Lilywhites but has since spent time on loan at four clubs, with Rovers his fifth loan move since joining the Seagulls.

He will provide pace and trickery in the wide areas and joins on an initial one-month loan.

Up front Harrison has a starting slot as god s sewn up alongside one of experienced Welsh international Jermaine Easter, former Forest Green Rovers hitman Matty Taylor or powerful former Kidderminster Harriers striker Nathan Blissett - who got two goals against the Bees last term.

At the back another summer addition, Chesterfield loanee Aaron Chapman, will start in the absence of Will Puddy.

Barnet's record at Bristol Rovers is poor; the Gas having only lost one of eight meetings at the Memorial Stadium.

Clarke's side were 2-1 winners at home last season in the pouring rain, Angelo Balanta netting at the death from a corner after Luima Villa's stunning free-kick from distance had cancelled out Taylor's opener.

The Bees fared better at The Hive in the second game of the season, winning 2-0 thanks to strikes from Charlie MacDonald and John Akinde.
