Today's meeting between Barnet and AFC Wimbledon will be more than your run-of-the-mill London derby for respective captains Curtis Weston and Barry Fuller.

Both men will lead their sides out at Kingsmeadow later today having played alongside one another at Gillingham and Barnet.

Away from the field they run the Fuller Weston Football Academy together and a group of their Academy players will be present at today’s League Two clash, presumably with loyalties split.

The pair first played together with the Gills between 2008 and 2012 and both men moved to Underhill in August 2012, on the same day no less, but were unable to prevent Edgar Davids’ side slipping out of the Football League.

Fuller would leave following relegation to join the Dons, who had been direct relegation rivals a matter of weeks earlier, whilst Weston remained with the club and helped Barnet back into the Football League at the second time of asking.

Speaking to the Dons’ website, Fuller said: “I played with Curtis for five-and-a-half years. We had some good times together at Gillingham, including winning promotion via the plays-off from League Two.

“Then we signed on the same day for Barnet. Curtis has stayed on and earned success by helping Barnet back into the league, but I joined Wimbledon and I have loved every minute of it.

“When Barnet last came here I was sat in the stands next to a few boys from Wimbledon who were not in the squad.

“I was suspended for that game, but I remember it being a great atmosphere. It was a six-pointer and after we won here it felt like we had the edge in it (relegation battle), but Wimbledon stayed up.

“I am glad thankfully now with the way it turned out,” he added.

And Fuller, 31, will be counting on the support of those in the stands later today when he tussles with Weston.

“Hopefully, they will be following the Dons because it’s at our place,” he said. “I would like to think that they will be cheering us on.

“It’s a great experience for them to see us playing against each other for the first time.

"Our head coach at the academy is the one who has been talking about it a lot and I think he has called for a 0-0 draw. I will take a clean sheet, but I want to win.”
