Luton Town had won just two of eight at home prior to Barnet’s visit today but Kenilworth Road is not a happy hunting ground for the Bees either and they duly lost 2-0, ending a five-game unbeaten run.

Martin Allen’s men had picked up a shock win at Oxford United in their most recent away fixture but failed to build on their maiden away league win of the season in Bedfordshire, extending a streak which has seen them lose on both previous visits.

Much like their last trip up the M1, on New Year’s Day 2014, the weather was miserable and by full-time time the 600-strong travelling support were equally glum after goals in either half from Danny Green and Cameron McGeehan sealed the win.

Josh Clarke, not given permission to play in last week’s FA Cup tie by parent club Brentford, replaced Sam Muggleton in Barnet’s only change; the left-back dropping to the bench.

Goalkeeper Raven Constable, signed in the week after a trial, was named on the bench.

Despite boasting a better away record than home it was the Hatters who made the brighter start.

And John Still’s men ought to have been ahead after five minutes when Paul Benson – one of four Luton changes – scampered down the right before planting a cross on the forehead of strike partner Josh McQuoid. He could only nod straight at Jamie Stephens, though.

Mistakes were an inevitability on a greasy surface and soon after Hatters stopper Mark Tyler misjudged the bounce of a long ball forward, allowing John Akinde to round him before seeing his route to an open goal blocked off.

But after 25 minutes it was the hosts who went in front, McQuoid scything through the Bees’ backline before shifting the ball right for Green to arrow into the top corner with unerring accuracy.

The Bees were indebted to Stephens two minutes later as he made the first of two good saves, stretching to paw away Cameron McGeehan’s heavily deflected strike from 20 yards.

Stephens was called into action just after the half-hour mark as Town ended the half on top, tipping a McQuoid header around the near post with the ball destined for the back of the net.

There were no changes at the break but Allen left it just five minutes before introducing Shaun Batt in place of Gambin after the break.

Barnet made a brighter start to the second period but it was Clarke, on the opposite side to Batt, who carved out the Bees’ best chance, slinging in a low cross which Akinde contrived to stab wide from the centre of the penalty area.

Allen’s side went closer still a few minutes later when Clarke clipped a cross up to the back post which Hatters skipper Scott Cuthbert had to head off the line.

Luton had an excellent chance to double their advantage on the hour but Jonathan Smith, timing his run to arrive late, could only direct a half-volley over the crossbar from six yards.

They got it right seven minutes later, though, as Cameron McGeehan scored his eighth of the season.

McQuoid’s cross from the right fell perfectly for Smith to tuck home on the run but he was bundled over by Yiadom. It mattered not, though, as McGeehan was on hand to coolly stroke home from 12 yards.

Luton almost snatched a third within minutes of the re-start, Smith fizzing a low left-footed effort wide of the far post with the aid of a deflection.

Smith went closer still at the death, dipping a volley just wide of Stephens' left-hand post from distance with the outside of his boot.
