Goalkeeper Jamie Stephens felt Barnet let head coach Martin Allen and their 600-strong travelling support down at Luton Town on Saturday but says they cannot plead misfortune anymore.

After winning four of their last five in the league and cup, drawing at Hartlepool United, the Bees came back down to earth with a bump at a sodden Kenilworth Road.

Whilst not second best in all departments as at Wimbledon and Bristol Rovers earlier in the campaign, there could be no complaints about the result in Bedfordshire with goals from Danny Green and Cameron McGeehan halting their unbeaten run.

Speaking afterwards, a candid Stephens said: “We’ve been doing brilliantly and the gaffer told us we’ve been doing well. But we feel like we’ve disappointed him today and the fans.

“Hopefully we can put it right next Saturday.”

The former Liverpool youngster continued: “I felt it was a hard day for us. We’ve been doing so well recently.

“We dropped below our standards and I don’t think we deserved anything out of the game by the end. The lads worked hard but sadly nothing came from it.

“I’m not sure [why our standards dropped]. We just didn’t get going, they got at us, they played well but we didn’t get going; there was no fluid passing; things weren’t coming off. It was just an off day it seems.”

It was a stark contrast to Barnet’s last away game when they won 3-2 at high flying Oxford United to end their away-day hoodoo with a first three points away from The Hive this season.

“We try to go out there and play with no fear and play our game and do what we can. But sadly it didn’t happen today,” said Stephens.

“I think winning at Oxford just showed we had been on an unlucky run away from home. We don’t play badly, we’ve just been unlucky.

“But we want to cancel out coming into the changing room and saying we’re unlucky. We want to go out and try to get performances and wins and do the best we can to get points on the board.”

Times Series:

With loanee Max Crocombe back at – ironically – Oxford, Stephens has assumed the number one jersey again and looks set for a run in the side with Graham Stack sidelined until the new year.

And the former Forest Green Rovers youngster admits it was tough seeing Crocombe take his spot in the team after being sent off at Portsmouth in September.

“It was a tough one,” he said. “But I just try to work hard, focus on my own game and that’s all I can: focus on myself and the team around me.

“It was hard coming out of the team but I’ve come back in and I feel like we’re doing OK so I will keep trying to progress and doing the right things.”

Times Series:

That will start at home to Morecambe on Saturday as the Bees look to get back to winning ways in League Two.

Before that fixture, though, Stephens will have more reason than most to keep abreast of the FA Cup first round replay between Brackley and former club Newport County with the winners facing the Bees for a place in round three at the beginning of next month.

“I’d only ever played on loan at Gloucester in the FA Cup and lost to Forest Green – my home team – sadly,” chuckled Stephens. “I think the priority has to be the league but the FA Cup is massive; everyone loves the FA Cup.

“I’ve got a few friends at Newport still, which is nice, but at the end of the day I’m a Barnet player and I want to do as well as I can for Barnet. If we do get them in the next round I won’t be holding back and I want to try to win.”
