Two goals in the first nine minutes did for Barnet as they went down 4-2 at Notts County on Tuesday evening.
Mike Edwards swept the Magpies into a sixth-minute lead before Jon Stead slid home a well-taken second.
After the break Alan Sheehan killed off any lingering hopes of a comeback with a third before Aaron McLean scored with a free-kick to reduce the arrears.
Almost instantly, though, Edwards nodded home from a corner to restore the hosts' three-goal lead. Luke Gambin pulled another back at the death but it mattered little.
