Defender Gavin Hoyte is no longer available for transfer, Martin Allen has confirmed, as Barnet are short of defensive cover.

The former Arsenal youngster only joined the Bees following his release from Gillingham in the summer, signing a two-year deal.

But despite featuring regularly head coach Allen revealed in October he had been made available for loan and transfer.

Hoyte was immediately left out of the Bees’ matchday 18 for the following game, at home to Exeter City, but has made five appearances since.

Asked if the defender was still available for transfer, Allen said: “No, not at the moment.

“Gavin has come back into the team and done very well and shown a great attitude. He’s stepped up a gear, that’s for sure.

“I think he was very unfortunate not to play at Northampton Town on Saturday. We can’t let anyone else go out at the moment.”

Centre-back Michael Nelson was ruled out for a minimum of three months after rupturing the ligaments and tendons in his shoulder in victory over Crawley Town meaning Hoyte’s versatility will be vital as Allen searches for cover.

The Bees boss has stated his desire to bring in centre-back cover as Bondz N’Gala and Bira Dembele are the only senior centre-backs at the club.

“At the moment we’ve only got two here so we’ll have to wrap up them in cotton wool and keep them fit,” admitted Allen.

“But the rest of it I think the players are interchangeable and can play in different positions.

“I think we’re looking strong with what we’ve got. I can take that Northampton game because I still believe the players we’ve got here are good enough to compete and win games as we’ve shown recently.”
