Martin Allen confirmed there have been no offers for Barnet’s transfer listed trio of Andy Yiadom, Mauro Vilhete and Ben Tomlinson and revealed he promised Yiadom he could leave in January last summer.

It was a surprise when on Tuesday the club announced the Bees’ captain was being made available for transfer with his contract up on June 30.

Allen explained he had turned down the offer of a new contract with Barnet following several offers, believed to be worth up to £250,000, from League One side Barnsley.

The Bees rejected those offers with Allen labelling them derogatory and derisory.

Making players who are entering the final months of their deal available for transfer in order to try to receive a fee is common practice at a lot of clubs in League One and Two.

Peterborough United, for example, have a policy of listing any player entering the final 12 months of his contract who hasn’t signed a new deal.

Asked after Saturday’s goalless draw with Bristol Rovers whether there had been any interest in the trio, Allen simply said: “No.”

He then continued: “No, [there has been] nothing in for Andy Yiadom. People may question why I’ve made him available.

“There was a big offer last summer for him. I persuaded him to stay through until the January window to help us establish ourselves in the Football League.

“Then I said to him if, by January, he’s done well and given us full commitment I would give him an opportunity.

“If clubs come in with an offer which suits the chairman then we will let him go to maximise his career and his earnings. I thought that was a very reasonable suggestion.”

However, if there are no offers for the full-back-cum-winger then he will remain at The Hive for the remainder of the season.

Allen has no qualms about keeping the former Watford scholar if a satisfactory offer doesn’t materialise.

“He’s been absolutely fantastic for us,” said the Bees boss.

“He’s great on the field, he’s superb off the field and I know if the offers don’t come in in January he will be good performer for us through until the end of the season.

“He won’t sulk and he won’t cry. He’s got real discipline.”
