Martin Allen is unsure whether he will return to the bench for Barnet’s League Two clash at York City on Saturday after missing Tuesday’s win at Newport County with flu.

The Bees head coach stayed at home and left the preparation of the team to assistant coach Gary Waddock, Development Team coach Ross Eames and player-coach Graham Stack.

In the event Barnet weren’t hampered by their boss’ absence, running out 3-0 winners at Rodney Parade thanks to goals from Andy Yiadom, Mark Randall and John Akinde.

Barnet travel to Bootham Crescent on Saturday to face second-bottom York City. But it is unclear whether Allen will be able to travel with his team.

“I’m not 100 per cent about this Saturday, again at York City,” he told the Times Series.

"I will have to see how I feel later in the week. My own health has to come first. Sometimes I forget I'm 50 years old."

The game was the first Allen has missed through illness since he was in West Ham United's youth team as a teenager when a dodgy pasty gave him a severely upset stomach.

But the Bees boss had no qualms about being forced to hand the reins to his coaching staff.

He said: "I spoke to the staff early on Monday morning and explained I couldn't make it.

"You can’t spread it to the other players and I knew the staff could deal with whatever was going to happen. I told them to get on with it and don't bother ringing me."

He continued: "I spoke to them all after the game and they were all pleased.

"When you win people might expect everyone to be delirious but you quickly move on.

"They were delighted with the performance and the players and we thoroughly deserved to win."
