Barnet left Bootham Crescent with a point after Jamie Stephens had performed heroics in the Bees goal to preserve a 1-1 draw against York City.

He restricted the home side to just one goal with York putting in a performance that belied their lowly league position.

Barnet, too, had their moments when they could have taken a second-half lead. But it would be hard to deny the Minstermen did not deserve something for their considerable efforts.

Following Barnet's impressive away display in midweek, when they demolished Newport County 3-0, head coach Martin Allen made just one change to the line-up.

Sam Togwell won a recall at the expense of the injured Bondz N’Gala. Allen himself was able to take his place in the technical area after missing the game at Rodney Parade with flu.

Ex-Bee Jake Hyde was leading the line for York and he was impressive in the early stages although he tired in the second-half as his lack of match-fitness became an issue; he was starting only his fourth game in an injury-ravaged campaign.

Hyde almost gave York an early lead when his overhead effort went narrowly wide and centre-back Dave Winfield’s header also had Stephens scrambling across his goal-line.

It wasn’t until the 15th minute that the Bees created an opportunity of note when John Akinde shot but his strike sailed over the cross-bar.

In the 20th minute Lewis Alessandra was the first to react when a neatly struck effort by Hyde struck the base of the post to give York a deserved lead.

Alessandra nearly extended York’s lead a moment later but Stephens beat away his attempt.

In the 37th Barnet drew level when James Pearson, increasingly impressive in the right-back berth for the Bees, burst down the flank. He delivered a perfectly weighted centre which Akinde expertly steered over and above the York keeper Scott Flinders.

A Luke Gambin shot from 25 yards so nearly gave Barnet a lead with half-time approaching but his effort was just off target.

Stephens excelled himself again at the start of the second period with a series of fine saves but it was Togwell who looked set to open his account for Barnet when from close range his effort was a fraction wide of the goal.

Mauro Vilhete was introduced from the bench on the hour and his abundant energy helped to stifle York and propel Barnet forward in search of a second goal.

Akinde did get the ball in the net from a Gambin cross but he was correctly adjudged to offside.

The home side, in desperate need of three points to help them in their relegation battle, introduced two lively forwards in Vadaine Oliver and Bradley Fewster in an attempt to find a winning goal.

Despite a few nervous moments in the closing minutes the Bees held firm for a point; a characteristic they have added to their game with the Bees now unbeaten away from home in 2016 since the heavy defeat at champions-elect Northampton Town on January 2.
