All good things must come to an end, and so too did Barnet's unbeaten start to the season on Saturday, as Chris Porter finally blew their house down in Crewe's 1-0 win at the Alexandra Stadium.

The Bees had played out a forgettable fixture until that point, but looked set to keep up their albeit fledgling form of drawing their away games and winning their home ones until Porter struck.

Jamie Stephens was again in form between the sticks for the visitors, but they had chances through wing-back David Tutonda and Mauro Vilhete, with the latter hitting the post from a set piece.

Chris Dagnall could have made the win comfortable for Crewe but was twice denied by Stephens, as Barnet dropped into mid-table amid a long, fruitless journey back from the north west.

Bad news for Elliott Johnson, that he will likely miss the rest of the season with a severe knee injury, forced Rossi Eames to make one change from the impressive win over Luton Town, bringing in Charlie Clough as his replacement in defence.

A first-half played out on a slick playing surface saw plenty of good football, but nothing for the highlights reel - and there is little else that can be said for the game before the break.

In fact, only an hour in would there be anything to trouble anyone who had fallen into a slumber, when Vilhete's free-kick crashed off the crossbar and was cleared from danger.

Tutonda had some meak pleas for a penalty waved away by refreee Anthony Backhouse, before he entered the book minutes later for a blatant dive.

From the game's next chance, Barnet's defence would be breached, from Harry Taylor's misjudgement of a bouncing ball deep in away territory.

This allowed Zoumana Bakayogo to sprint away down the left before delivering a perfect cross to Porter, who gave Michael Nelson the slip before tapping in with 15 minutes to go.

Dagnall could have wrapped up victory in the final stages but was kept out by Stephens, before Barnet had half a chance to reclaim a point from an unlikely source.

Jack Taylor's pumped ball forward fell for Nelson, but the captain could not steer his effort goalwards.
