Mark Robson admits he expects his Barnet side to be better in possession after Charlton Athletic defeat

A pre-season defeat against League One champions Charlton Athletic may not have surprised Barnet boss Mark Robson, but he did admit he was slightly disappointed with the Bees display.

Goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips, Jan Kermorgant and Jonnie Jackson put the Addicks comfortably ahead but Jon Nurse pulled one back for the Bees before the break.

Kermorgant grabbed his second and the Addicks’ fourth in the second half and Barnet found it difficult to break down the Championship opponents.

After the Bees had hit sixteen goals in their two previous pre-season matches, the fans at Underhill may have been expecting more from their side.

And Robson believes his side failed to use the ball as well as they have in previous games.

He said: “I was a little bit disappointed to be honest in terms of us keeping possession, I expect to us to do better.

“We have been a lot better over the last few weeks in training and the games that we have played, albeit against lesser opposition.

“But we ended up making hard work for ourselves but in terms of fitness it was great because we were running around a lot.”

The second half was a rather uneventful affair as both managers made several changes to their sides.

When asked whether the disjointed performance in the second period was down to tiredness or the substitutions, Robson answered: “Probably a bit of both. It was a tough game for us – which it always was going to be against Charlton because they are a quality side.

“And of course when they are keeping the ball like they did, it makes it hard for a team because you are chasing shadows half of the time.

“Having said that, it was a little disappointing because we didn’t threaten too much, we scored the one goal which I’m pleased about but we didn’t create enough.

“That is obviously something that is disappointing but I’m not too disappointed because the opposition and quality is far superior than what we will be facing every week.”
