We had a very exciting season - a tough start (first match against the eventual winners of the League) and halfway through I was nearly ready to chuck in the towel, and accept the inevitable fact that we were headed back down to the Second Division.

Fancy playing chess all weekend? In the UK, we have plenty of established one day chess tournaments of five or six rounds duration... Golders Green Rapidplay being a case in point. But if you want to really get stuck in to eleven rounds of chess over two days, only a short train ride away - here is your chance!

Middlesex League: Where We Stand in Black and White

4:28pm Wednesday 5th March 2008

The Middlesex League standings as of 5th March 2008, as far as I can make out from the Middlesex League website, are as follows; 9.5 King's Head 6.5 Hackney 6.0 Ealing 5.0 Imperial College 4.5 Athenaeum 3.0 West London 3.0 Hendon (wins against Metropolitan and Hammersmith, draws against Ealing and Imperial College) 0.5 Metropolitan We are still in the relegation zone with FIVE matches to go! So we probably need to beat West London at Golders Green on 20th March (we should have won the match we played at their venue...) and then Metropolitan in the penultimate match of the season and send them BOTH down to Division 2. It's still tricky, but may all work out in the final analysis....

League Leaders Concede (game) Points

Dan Ellis scored a notable victory

1:18pm Friday 18th January 2008

League Leaders King's Head Chess Club, hotly tipped to win the Middlesex League this season, dropped three points last night conceding four draws and one loss. Sadly, not enough for Hendon Chess Club's First Team to earn a draw after a full three hour's play. I was the first to finish; fortunately I found a trick in a difficult position which won a pawn. This encouraged my opponent to offer me a draw immediately! Sreten fell foul of the 'no mobile phones' rule when his rang minutes before the close of play and his opponent immediately claimed the game.Gary, Helge and Liviu scored good draws in long and difficult games. The performance of the night came from Dan Ellis, who scored a notable lone victory for the home side. His game was the last to finish, but several spectators pointed out afterwards that he had missed an easy win about half an hour earlier!
