Russian Grandmaster Alexander Cherniev won the monthy Hendon Chess Club 'First Thursday' Blitz tournament, held at St Alban's Church Hall, West Heath Drive, Golders Green on 4th October. Each player had ten minutes to complete the whole game.

Hendon's top board Tomer Eden lost in the first round to the dangerous tactician Mutale and never recovered. Cherniaev took a quick draw against his pupil Dan Ellis in round four but otherwise won easily. Jonathan Landau (who beat Eden and Ellis and had a good club championship this year) lost on time to Hjort in the last round in a winning position.

19 played on the night, profits go to Hendon Chess Club, which meets at the hall every Thursday from 7.30pm.
