Late try not enough to deny Hendon as they defeat West London
9:30am Friday 23rd November 2012 in npower League Two Table & Results
Hendon survived a late scare to complete a 20-15 home win over West London in Herts Middlesex League One.
The hosts started the contest strongly and used the slope to their advantage.
Hendon were camped in the West London half for the first 15 minutes before making the breakthrough when Lee Linale fired over a penalty.
From the restart, the visitors went on the attack and following a sustained period of pressure on the Hendon backline, they made a breakthrough and scored the first try of the afternoon.
However, the home side quickly reacted and Michael Blake thought he had touched down only for the referee to adjudge that the ball had been held up.
From the scrum, Hendon pushed their visitors back over the line and captain Brian O’Regan managed to force his way over. Linale added the extras and shortly before the break fired over a penalty to put Hendon 13-7 up at the interval.
Chris Byrne was sin-binned early into the second period and it allowed West London to capitalise and score a penalty to reduce the deficit.
With Byrne back on the pitch, Hendon were able to go over for the second time.
From a ruck, scrum-half John McCarthy passed out to full-back Tom Mathias, who broke through to score. Linale converted the try to put Hendon 20-10 ahead. West London went on the attack and crossed the line five minutes from time. However, Hendon saw out the game to record a well-earned four league points.
