Tara Moore helped lead the way for the British players as she claimed a landmark victory on the opening day of the main draw at AEGON GB Pro-Series Barnstaple at The Tarka Tennis Centre, Barnstaple.
The Potters Bar player scored one of the biggest wins of her career as she took out the fourth seed, beating Jana Cepelova, the world number 106, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
“I played well today,” said the 20-year-old afterwards. “I used my forehand well and was coming in quite a bit too. It’s been good having last week at home, rather than playing a tournament, as I had time to refocus and get some more practice and training in.”
Moore, the second highest ranked British player in the draw, behind Anne Keothavong, started well, breaking her Slovakian opponent four out of five times in first set, but Cepelova struck back in the second, winning five games in a row after trailing 1-2, to force the match into a decider.
In the final set the British player was twice a break down early on, before winning won four games in a row for 5-2, before serving out to love at 5-3, to claim the win in 1 hour and 29 minutes.
