Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers athlete Allan Smith set a new Scottish Indoor high jump record with a fine performance at the Scottish Universities Championships.

The competition ended as a head to head between Ray Bobrownicki and Smith who both cleared 2.00m, 2.05m and 2.10m.

The bar was raised to 2.15m and Bobrownicki was the first to falter as he knocked down the bar on his initial attempt.

Smith cleared the height with his first jump but Bobrownicki responded and made it over.

With the bar now at the Scottish Native Indoor record of 2.20m, set by David Barnetson in 1997, Smith produced a magnificent jump to make it over.

Bobrownicki failed both of his attempts which gifted the Shaftesbury competitor top spot.

However, Smith requested the bar be raised to 2.22m which he promptly cleared to improve his personal best by seven centimeters.

Elsewhere, Harriers were well represented at the McCain UK Cross Challenge Series in Antrim, Northern Ireland on Saturday.

In the Senior Women’s race, Under-23 athlete Beth Potter claimed eighth place in a time of 18.59 while Melissa Courtney, who was running for the South of England, crossed the line in 20.26 to secure 16th.

Lizzie Bird produced a strong run in the Under-20 women’s event and her time of 12.47 was enough for second place.

In the Under-20 men’s’ race, Michael Callegari represented the South of England and he claimed a fifth with a time of 17.48. The winner was James McMurray of St Albans Athletics club with 17.24. At the first day of the Southern Indoor Championships at Lee Valley, Kyle Langford made it to the Under-20 men’s 800m final but had to settle for a silver medal after finishing second to Sean Molloy of Tonbridge.

Langford’s time of 1.55.21 was a new season’s best.

In the Under-20 Men's High Jump, Tim Buckle won the Bronze Medal on count back with a season’s best jump of 1.90m.

In the Women’s equivalent event, Kate Jones had an excellent first competition finishing sixth with 1.60m.
