Potters Bar skier Robert Poth has become the English giant slalom champion in the Under-16s category.

Poth commanded the field from the start of the competition in Bornio, Italy, with his first run of 42.00 giving him over a second lead.

This was backed up on his second run (42.31) which enabled him to fight off Iain Innes and Jordan Fellows who finished second and third respectively to gain the victory.

The race was under a new format for this age group, with competitors now taking part in two runs, with both times counting towards the final result.

This change has been put in place before the British Championships later in the season.

The aims of this being to better prepare the young skiers for further International Ski Federation races.

The victory signalled a successful start to 2013 for Poth who also won the FIS international children’s event ‘Ski Interkriterium’ becoming the first British competitor to win the Under-16 competition in 15 years.
