Two late goals proved costly for Wingate & Finchley as they suffered a 2-1 defeat away at Metropolitan Police in the Ryman Premier Division.
Wingate went ahead in the 15th minute when Andre Scarlett rifled a shot into the net from just inside of the penalty area.
Bobby Smith in the Blues’ goal was rarely troubled in the opening half and Police went into the interval behind.
In the second period both teams continued to play entertaining football. Hector Mackie almost doubled the Wingate advantage but after breaking through the hosts’ defence he could only shoot at the goalkeeper.
It proved an important save for Police as, with nine minutes remaining, they levelled the contest. Duran Robinson collected the ball 30 yards out and his curled strike found the top corner.
Jack Hutchinson and Daniel Brown missed chances to put Wingate ahead before Police secured all three points in the 88th minute.
Ty Smith was the match winner as his shot from outside of the box left Smith with no chance in the Blues goal.
Wingate were unlucky not to have gained something from their visit to Imber Court but will hope to get back to winning ways when the take on Enfield Town this evening.
