Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers off to promising start in Metropolitan League

Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers enjoyed an encouraging start to the Metropolitan League season on Saturday in the first meet at Claybury.
The Senior Men’s team came fourth, the Senior Women’s team finished eighth, while the Under-13 Boys won their category and the Under-13 Girls came second.
There were individual victories for Richard Goodman in the Senior Men, Jamie Harper in the Under-13 Boys, while Rachel Felton came second in the Senior Women. Mia Groom and Gerry O’Brien both finished third in the Under-13s.
Goodman led the way for the Harriers men and came home in pole position with a time of 24.25. Five places back was Niall Fleming with 25.46, while Glen Watts made the top ten with 25.57.
Orlando Edwards (19th) sneaked inside the fastest 20 with a time of 26.53 before Ben Rochford’s time of 27.37 saw him finish as the quickest Under-20 and 34th overall.
Mark Pearce was third fastest Under-20 and came 44th overall in 28.16, while Kyle Langford and Dalton McGuigan were not far behind with times of 29.04 and 29.26 respectively.
The Barnet team finished with 824 points behind Woodford Green with Essex Ladies (891), Serpentine (1020) and winners Highgate Harriers (1098).
The Senior Women’s team were led by Felton’s second placing as she crossed the line in 21.34.
Margaret Cooper was next in 19th with a time of 24.52 and Lucy Short wrapped up the Harriers contingent in 35th, crossing the line in 26.10.
