Ulrich Landvreugd said Hayes & Yeading did not give Barnet a “present” in the FA Trophy first round and admitted the 1-0 victory was more important than the Bees’ performance.

The game certainly wasn’t a classic and Hayes arguably deserved a replay at The Hive on Tuesday. However, George Sykes’ overhead kick in the 89th minute ensured the Bees made it into the second round.

Barnet assistant coach Landvreugd said: “The result is the most important thing. We try to win with good football and I think we were the better team but you have to be careful. They performed quite well and didn’t give us a present.

“It was a typical cup game. They gave everything and played with a different shape they normally do to try and keep a clean sheet.”

On Sykes’ goal, he added: “I think he needed a goal for his confidence and I am sure that will be a boost for him.”

The match was Barnet’s third away trip in a week and Landvreugd admitted tiredness was an issue against Hayes.

He said: “There is a little bit of tiredness and a few of the players have been ill. There are some heavy legs and we’re glad we don’t have to play on Tuesday.

“We have a week to recover and that is good because we have played a lot of football in the last two and a half weeks.”
