Ulrich Landvreugd says he didn’t give up hope that Barnet would find a winning goal against Southport and the Bees joint head coach was rewarded in the final minute.

Barnet had created enough chances to be ahead against the Sandgrounders but it wasn’t until the 94th minute that they broke the deadlock.

A corner was swung into the penalty area by Luisma Villa and Mauro Vilhete rose highest to head the Bees to victory.

It was Landvreugd and Dick Schruder’s first game in full charge at the Bees and the former felt Barnet deserved their late winner.

“In the end you can say we were lucky but we created a lot of opportunities and one then fell for us,” he said.

“We always had hope because you can score or concede in the last minute from a corner. We were pushing hard in second half and in the first half our possession game was good, we went more forwards than backwards.

“So our possession was good from the back four, the midfielders and the guys at the top were a little bit unlucky.”

He continued: “The most important thing was the win for us and the supporters. It was a great goal from Mauro but overall I think we deserved it.

“If you look at the whole game we were the better team and created the most chances but they have to go in.”

A large part of the second period was played in atrocious conditions as a large storm engulfed The Hive.

“The minute I arrived at The Hive the sun was shining," Landvreugd said. “Two hours later it was the opposite. It was quite hard for the players but when it stopped the performance improved again.”
