There was disappointment for Finchley ABC’s Mason Smith as he suffered a narrow points defeat to Billy Beer in the London Youth Under 56kg final last Friday.

In an untidy contest, Smith was cautioned twice by the referee for holding even though his opponent was as guilty of the same offence.

Smith tried to box at length but Beer continued to maul inside and was declared a narrow points winner.

Elsewhere, three Finchley fighters were in action at the Bodyshots ABC open show on Saturday.

Junior Joseph Ward took on home boxer Benny Friend and despite giving up height and reach to his opponent, the Finchley youngster coasted to a comfortable points win.

Finchley’s Patrick Doherty faced off against Fisher ABC southpaw Dominique Joyce and was in control throughout the fight.

Doherty didn’t let the usually confident Joyce dictate from the centre of the ring, however, he was adjudged to have lost by a split decision.

The final bout of the night was a senior contest between Finchley’s Shaiafioliah Sahak and Norwich City ABC’s Denny Perry.

Shaiafioliah had only 24 hours to prepare for the bout after returning for a two-week holiday and he struggled with the pace and sharpness of Perry in the first round of the encounter.

The second saw Shaiafioliah match Perry in the exchanges despite the Norwich fighter showing quick hands and feet.

Shaiafioliah was still trailing on points at the start of the third but showed his determination as he rained constant blows at his opponent.
