BOXING: Gharib progresses to North West ABA final
Updated 2:31pm Wednesday 9th April 2014 in Sport
Finchley clubmates Mo Gharib and Shafi Sahak met in the North West ABA Under 60kg semi-final on Saturday, with Gharib awarded the split decision.
Gharib had qualified for the semi-final by beating Tottenham and Enfield's Karl Barnes the previous day, whilst Sahak had beaten Hook ABC's southpaw Mohammed Abio.
Sahak began the first round by closing Gharib down at every opportunity and throwing punches in bursts, never allowing his opponent to settle.
The second round followed in a similar vein, but Gharib was able to land a few eye-catching shots.
The final round produced a breathless three minutes of boxing, with both Garib and Sahak landing a number of shots before Gharib was eventually awarded the split decision by the judges.
In the Under 69kg final, Finchley's former London ABA and All Ghanaian champion Norris Thompson lost to Melvin Fawaz of Stonebridge ABC before announcing that he will hang up his gloves.
A tentative first round passed by with only the occasional burst of activity, before Thompson asserted himself on Fawaz in the second round with a string of twos and threes.
Fawaz clawed the momentum back in the final round and was eventually given the decision in a very close call.
Thompson will now pursue other interests after announcing that he has "achieved all he can" in boxing.
Finchley's Ossie Jarvier had gone out in the Under 81kg against Luke Robinson of Hooks ABC on Tuesday 3, whilst Paul Greenidge was defeated by Kingsley Okolie of Haringey ABC in the Under 75kg on Friday 4.
