Mauro Vilhete will remain at Barnet after the club decided to trigger the two-year option in his contract.

The 20-year-old wasn’t one of the players named in the Bees’ retained list with head coach Martin Allen stating he was yet to make a decision regarding Vilhete.

However, Allen has decided to keep the Barnet Academy graduate at the club and says his versatility will prove invaluable next season.

“I had a meeting with Mauro Vilhete today to inform him that we are taking up the option in his contract,” Allen told the club website.

“Three things have been significant in helping me make my decision.

“One, Mauro is versatile and can play in several different positions and with a small squad of players adaptability will be vital.

“Two, he was voted as most improved player and for a young player this could not be any better. It is significant and shows a willingness and desire to get better and improve, I like this.

“Three, he is a terrific, well mannered, polite young man.

“I really do hope next year he is flourishes and continues to improve and develop.”

Vilhete featured 31 times for the Bees last season and successfully made the transition from winger to full-back.

His consistent displays led to him receiving the Young Player of the Year award in addition to the Most Improved Player honour.
