Martin Allen has revealed he is looking to make another addition to the Barnet squad and hopes to tie Adam Mekki to a longer-term deal.

The Bees have added Yeovil Town striker Sam Hoskins on a one-month loan deal in the last week, following Charlie MacDonald's injury, and Allen is looking to add another new face to his squad.

He said: “I am trying to get one more player in. I sat down with the chairman last week and the chairman has been very supportive. He is backing it really – thank God.

“We are a quarter of the way through the season and I think it is important to review what you have got and how you are going to go forward. And of course, part of the job is always to improve, so I am looking to try and bring in one more player to strengthen the squad.

“But if we don’t get him, as I have said, all the players are adaptable and as we saw with Elliot Johnson on Saturday, he played in centre midfield and did very well. It is credit to all the players: they train hard, they listen hard and they are adaptable.”

Former Aldershot winger Mekki made his second start for the Bees in Saturday’s comprehensive win over Altrincham and Allen has confirmed the 22-year-old is in discussions with the Bees over a deal to remain at the club.

He explained: “Mekki is a great lad. He is playing here non-contract. I am, we are, talking to him about getting him sorted out on a short-term deal until Christmas. The chairman wants to get something done.

“He is playing for nothing and I am sure all the Barnet supporters – like the players and the staff and myself – [will think] it is good when you have got someone playing for nothing – it says a lot about his character.”

Allen also revealed there had been interest from other clubs in the former Reading youngster.

“He had a chance to go somewhere else but he wanted to stay here and be with us,” said Allen. “He did really well when he came on at Telford and I thought he was superb on Saturday against Altrincham. He is a good player to have around. And he’s a good bloke as well; he trains hard and is another good professional.”

Meanwhile young striker Iffy Allen, who has recovered from a fractured fibula suffered in pre-season, has been made available for loan.
