Hendon boss Gary McCann was pleased with his side’s reaction to going 3-2 down at Tonbridge Angels on Saturday, admitting the Greens could easily have collapsed after surrendering a 2-0 lead, before they ultimately drew 3-3.

Goals from skipper Lee O’Leary and Leon Smith had the visitors comfortably ahead after 25 minutes.

However, a brace from Billy Medlock pulled the hosts level before half-time. Three minutes after the break, the comeback was completed when Dee Okoijie netted.

Not to be denied, Hendon equalised in the 58th minute when Casey Maclaren fired home from inside the penalty area.

Reflecting on the draw, McCann praised his side’s reaction to seeing their 2-0 lead overhauled.

He told the club’s website: “We didn’t recover too well from going in at half-time drawing 2-2 and soon went down 3-2.

“But we could then have fallen away from there, and it says a lot about the squad that we didn’t. I think the wake-up call came when they had a great chance to make it 4-2 a couple of minutes later, but they didn’t play a three or four-on-two opportunity well.

“However, we were very good in the last half-an-hour and, after we equalised, we took control again and it was they who were hanging on more for the final whistle.”

Hendon moved up to third in the Ryman Premier League standings with a 3-2 win at Leatherhead on Wednesday.

Leon Smith and Casey Maclaren gave the Greens a 2-0 lead, before Matt Smart got one back for the hosts.

Maclaren restored the visitors’ two-goal advantage before Becka Kah Dembele ensured a nervy finish with 25 minutes left.
