Hendon striker Leon Smith became the first Greens’ player to score in eight consecutive games in 89 years after netting in the 3-1 London Cup win over Barking on Monday.

The forward has become one of just second Hendon players ever to score in eight straight fixtures for the club - with the last being Oscar Reinke back in 1925.

Hendon took the lead in the 38th minute when Belal Aite-Ouakrim capped off a neat move involving Peter Dean and Chris Seeby, and the forward doubled the Greens’ lead when he scored his second in the 56th minute.

A goal from Ryan Creed in the 79th minute set up an interested final 11 minutes as the Essex Senior League side halved the deficit, but a record-equalling strike from Smith ensured Hendon’s safe progress.

Gary McCann’s side will now face either London Bari or Redbridge in the second round, with the two set to face off at the end of the month.

On Saturday, Hendon extended their unbeaten streak to ten matches, beating Lewes 2-1 in the dying seconds - climbing to thirds in the Ryman Premier League standings.

After a cagey opening period and a handful of near-misses, the Greens took the lead in the 33rd minute.

Aaron Morgan ran at the heart of the Lewes’ defence and tested former Hendon keeper Rikki Banks with a powerfully-struck effort, Smith following in to beat the grounded gloveman and open the scoring.

There was a setback for McCann shortly after when midfielder Casey MacClaren collided with Banks, suffering shoulder ligament damage - an injury which is likely to end up requiring surgery.

Just before the hour mark the equaliser arrived. Jack Dixon collected the ball midway inside the Hendon half and charged towards the penalty area before driving towards the middle of the goal and firing a 20-yard effort beyond Ben McNamara.

With time running out, substitute Lee O’Leary proved to be the hero, timing his run into to the penalty area perfectly and heading Oliver Sprague’s cross home to seal the win in dramatic fashion.
