Hendon manager Gary McCann was frustrated by the goals his side conceded, despite coming back from 3-0 down to beat Wingate & Finchley 4-3 and secure their first Ryman League Cup win in eight years.

The Greens were trailing 3-0 after half-an-hour at The Harry Abrahams Stadium on Tuesday night following strikes from Nico Muir, Ola Sogbanmu and Rob Laney.

Max McCann – son of Greens boss Gary – then scored his first for the club and before half-time, last man Kieron Street was dismissed for bringing down Peter Dean in the penalty area. Sam Murphy converted the penalty.

After the break, Leon Smith drew the visitors level when he rounded Blues keeper Jack Metcalfe, before Sogbanmu diverted Hendon sub Ryan Palmer’s cross past his own keeper in the 88th minute.

Hendon will now face a trip to Enfield Town in round two.

Reflecting on the win, McCann admitted he was frustrated by the unerring similarity of all three goals his side conceded.

He explained: “It was frustrating; [for] all three goals the full-backs have gone out into areas where we have not tracked or protected our full-backs and they have put balls in the box which have ended up being finished too easily.

“From a coaching perspective there is room for improvement, but for any goal conceded, there is room for improvement.”

Wingate & Finchley director of football Dave Norman was encouraged by his side’s performance, admitting Hendon could not cope with their attacking play.

“It was a frustrating evening,” he mused. “I thought the first 30 minutes we were excellent. We played with a lot of pace and our passing and movement was really positive. We had lots of goalscoring opportunities, and if I’m honest I don’t think Hendon knew how to cope with us.

“The second half we clawed our way back into the game. On reflection, I was hoping for penalties and then you never know, but that is cup football.”

Both sides exited the FA Cup at the third qualifying round stage on Saturday, with Hendon slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Dorchester Town.

Smith was unable to stretch his goalscoring record to nine consecutive games as Andy Robinson got the only goal.

Danny Nielsen’s Wingate & Finchley side exited the competition following a 2-0 loss against Conference South pace-setters Havant & Waterlooville, with Bradley Bubb bagging a brace.

Edgware Town have reached the quarter final of the Middlesex Premier Cup after beating Northwood Reserves 2-1 on Tuesday. Arron Hayles and Olu Qaudri got the goals.

On Saturday Edgware were beaten 3-0 against Arlesey Town Reserves.
