Martin Allen will be sending his Barnet players out to win a ‘fantastic’ FA Cup first round tie against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, stating he doesn’t believe in enjoying the occasion.

Conference table-toppers Barnet host the Chairboys, who are top of League Two, in the first round proper of the FA Cup at The Hive and Allen is gunning for an upset after earlier admitting he wanted a Premier League scalp from this year’s competition.

Barnet overcame Chelmsford City 4-1 in their fourth qualifying round replay, whilst the Buckinghamshire side enter this year’s competition for the first time by virtue of being a Football League club.

Allen has promised to take the competition seriously from the outset, despite the fact the Bees are also juggling a promotion push, and is looking to cause an upset by winning Saturday’s clash.

“People say ‘just go out and enjoy the occasion’; well I do not believe in that one, it is professional sport – we have got to go all out and win it,” stated Allen. “There is no going out and just having a nice happy Saturday afternoon and patting ourselves on the back and patting them on the back and all saying: ‘isn’t it wonderful to be top of the leagues both of us’, and having a nice picture together.

“At three o’clock the whistle goes and oh my God, hell hath no fury.”

Barnet met the Chairboys in pre-season at The Hive in their final warm-up match before the league season began, and despite going down 1-0, the Bees put in a good performance.

Asked if August’s fixture between the two sides would have any bearing on his preparation for the first round tie, Allen said: “No. All I know is it’s a local derby and the magic of the FA Cup.

“They have had a big win (2-1 at Oxford United) on Saturday away at their local rivals down the M40. We have had a win just around the M25 against our London rivals (2-1 at Welling United to go nine points clear at the summit), both sets of supporters will be really happy with their clubs being top of the league.”

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has drawn plaudits for the job he has done at Adams Park this season, guiding Wanderers to the League Two summit six months after the club were almost relegated into the Conference on a dramatic final day of the season.

The Bees boss is among those admirers and said: “The Wycombe supporters, after nearly getting relegated last year, for their manager to turn that club round to a team to be top of the league, he has done an unbelievable job.

“I think for both sets of supporters and both football clubs, the fact that we are top of the league, it’s a derby, it is going to be a fantastic FA Cup occasion on Saturday afternoon and I would love this place to be sold out and I am sure Wycombe will take up their allocation.

“I think our supporters are starting to believe that there is something happening here at Barnet Football Club and it is moving in the right direction and I think Saturday is going to be a massive, massive crowd and should be a brilliant atmosphere.”

Allen also revealed the circumstances under which Sam Hoskins returned to parent club Yeovil Town following his loan stay.

Speaking after the original FA Cup tie with Chelmsford City, Allen told the Times Series that Hoskins’ loan agreement had been extended, but speaking on Tuesday admitted he had opted to “look in another direction” over the weekend.

Defender Sam Muggleton is still edging towards a first-team return as he recovers from bone bruising on his shin, suffered in the 1-1 draw at Braintree Town at the end of September.
