Skills coach Joe Shaw felt Saracens were deserved winners against Ospreys in the LV=Cup on Friday, as a youthful Sarries side won 21-9 at the Gnoll.

Ben Spencer was the match-winner for the Men in Black, kicking all of Saracens’ points with seven successful penalty attempts. Sam Davies hit back with nine points from the boot for the Neath side, who came off second best in Pool One.

Speaking to Saracens’ website, Shaw said: “We are ecstatic about the result. Not many teams come down here and get a result and we came down tonight with a youthful team with a lot of lads who are from our academy, and coupled with a few senior guys, they all put in a great of shift. We were deserved winners.”

Winger George Perkins was sin binned after 19 minutes, whilst Gareth Thomas was also carded for the hosts.

Ahead 12-6 at the break, Sarries kicked on after the re-start and a further three penalties from Spencer sealed the win for the Wolf Pack.

Shaw continued: “It was torrential rain, and that’s what you expect when you come to South Wales at this time of year (laughs). The boys really stuck to the plan.

"I think we need to give a special mention to Ben Spencer. His kicking was red hot today, and I think the way he and Nils Mordt controlled the game in these conditions was superb.”

Attention now turns to Sunday’s friendly with DHL Western Province at Allianz Park (1.00pm kick off).
