Hendon boss Gary McCann felt his side’s defending in the 4-1 defeat by Bognor Regis Town was as poor as it had been all season and expects a reaction on Saturday.

The Rocks ended the Greens’ 13-match unbeaten run in fine style, with an early own goal from James Fisher setting the tone. Alex Parsons doubled up soon after, with Ollie Pearce getting a third after just 23 minutes.

Belal Aite-Ouakrim pulled one back for Hendon a minute after the third, but Bognor scored a late fourth via Doug Tuck.

Speaking to the club’s website, McCann said: “We didn’t start the game at all well and were blitzed in the first 25 minutes. The defending was not good enough and that goes from right-back to left-back. I think it was as poor as we have been all season.

“The back four have not been criticised very often this season. Their performances have been of a high standard, but we dropped below the levels required Saturday. I do see this very much as a blip and expect a reaction.”

Hendon did show a reaction of sorts on Tuesday night when they won 1-0 at Enfield Town in the Isthmian League Cup, with Kezie Ibe scoring the game’s only goal to secure a third round home clash with Hampton & Richmond Borough.

McCann’s side host VCD Athletic on Saturday before travelling to Leiston on Tuesday.

Wingate & Finchley scored twice in the opening 11 minutes to win 2-1 at Bury Town on Saturday.

The win leaves the Blues a place and three points outside the Isthmian Premier Division play-offs, although they have played three more than Leiston in fifth.

Rob Laney gave Wingate & Finchley the lead after three minutes when he fired past keeper Alex Archer.

Bury’s task was heightened when Callum Bennett was dismissed for a tackle from behind in the penalty area, with David Knight converting the resultant penalty.

Joe Benjamin got one back for the home side after the break, but the Blues held on for all three points.

Wingate host East Thurrock United on Saturday and then play Kingstonian on Tuesday.

New Edgware boss Michael Roche oversaw the Wares’ first home win of the season on Saturday, beating Codicote 1-0 thanks to Stuart Blackburne’s strike.

Edgware are away to Winslow on Saturday.
