England duo Alex Goode and Brad Barritt drew plentiful praise from director of rugby Mark McCall as Saracens beat second-placed Bath Rugby 34-24.

The Men in Black ran out winners at Allianz Park thanks to tries from Chris Wyles, Jamie George and Chris Aston, whilst the imperious Goode kicked 16 points for Sarries.

Speaking to the club website, McCall enthused: “I thought Alex was phenomenal today, not just in attack, but he must have made three or four last ditch tackles on their wingers.

“He was brilliant today. Charlie [Hodgson] took a knock to his hamstring, so to come on and place kick as well as he did was great.

“Brad Barritt was another who was phenomenal today. He handled the ball brilliantly at times. It tells you a lot about Brad Barritt that he can comeback midweek and perform at that level.”

Tom Homer kicked the first points of the afternoon only for Charlie Hodgson to reply for Sarries.

Wyles then put the Men in Black 8-3 up when he combined with Alistair Hargreaves and Hodgson to go over, though Hodgson’s conversion drifted wide. Goode did then add three points from the tee to nudge the Wolf Pack further in front.

After the break, Goode dissected the posts with his second penalty of the afternoon and George soon went over to give the hosts the edge.

Bath stayed in touch when Semesa Rokoduguni, Tom Homer converting to reach 600 Premiership points.

Saracens quickly cancelled out the score though, Ashton racing onto Goode’s grubber kick to cross the whitewash.

A scrum penalty on the hour earned Goode a further three points before Olly Woodburn pulled one back for Bath after the TMO ruled Sam Burgess had not blocked off a defender.

Rokoduguni ran in his second try, which was converted by Homer, but Goode continued his excellent kicking display with another three points to seal the win.

Assessing the overall performance, McCall commented: “Today was about putting in a good performance and getting the four points. We had the opportunity to kick on and get more in the game, but in the first sixty minutes of the game I thought we were the dominant team.”
